JD Stefan
John "JD" Stefan has been described as a musical
Renaissance Man, a "one-man-band" and, as he would put it
himself, "just self sufficient." JD ventured into music
with piano lessons at an early age and set the foundation
from which he would apply his knack for other instruments.
Within a short time JD went from being known as an
accomplished drummer to performing as lead vocalist and lead
guitarist in bands featuring 100% of his own material.
In 1994 JD produced and released “Higher Ground”; an
instrumental offering he recorded for the former
Berkeley-based retailer The Nature Company. The release sold
over 20,000 units in Nature Company stores throughout the US
and Canada. JD was also a member of Che’ Records recording
artist Dart, contributing drums, keyboards, guitar and
trumpet to 2 singles, an EP and the group’s critically
acclaimed full-length CD. JD formed Overcurve in 1998 and
produced the band’s eponymous debut CD in 2000. Overcurve,
with JD at the helm, followed up recently with their
sophomore release "Tilt" in early 2006. He has also recorded
and produced his first solo rock-and-roll effort "Soul
Divided" set for release this year.
Not one to remain idle for long, JD contributed
production and performance credits last year to SF Bay Area
singer/songwriter Julia Lau's debut release 'In the
Wildflowers and Weeds."
JD currently resides in Idaho where he continues to write
and record compiling yet more new songs that will be made
available for licensing opportunities and a future release.
He also produces instrumental pieces for film, television
and commissions as well as contributing his talents to other
artists as a performer, arranger and producer. He also
performs acoustically and though Overcurve has spread apart
in a geographical sense, JD maintains a collaborative
arrangement with the band which may include some future
performances.
JD's thoughtful, well-crafted songs are always emotive
and expressive with a sense of space. He expertly
blends atmospheric and lush textural backdrops with deft
grooves and rhythms while retaining a good old rock-and-roll
guitar approach placed in a memorable and accessible pop
format.
At the end of the day there is an element that weaves
throughout JD's music that can capture just about anyone.
Whether through his introspective lyrics, the emotion of his
tracks or just the authority he delivers as a musician and
performer, there's something to be found in the music by
everyone. All in all, music for the rest of us...
